Versus the Birds

I biked across my parent’s town today.

In five miles I passed two lemon groves and

five churches. Instead of broken bottles on the pavement,

or pieces of furniture set out on stoops,

there are avocados, whole ones, fallen off the trees

and rolled into the street.
